The mature style of Gerald Wasserman follows years of work in the modern idiom. The international character of his work reflects the years spent in Italy and France where he worked and exhibited. In recent years his studio has been in Monterey, California. His work has also appeared in many art galleries in Europe and the United States including Gallerie Renee´ Drouet, Paris, Galleria Schneider, Rome, and the Newman & Saunders Gallery in Wayne, Pennsylvania. Gerald Wassermans scenes of Italian caffe´s are not portraits, rather they are complex contemporary images subtly imbued with the essence of classical art. Wasserman uses the social institution of the Italian caffe´ as a framework, a stage on which events occur: meetings and departures, assignations, engagements, flirtations. Painted with a stark modernity, the figures nonetheless convey the feel of a classical frieze, solid and sculptural. Through the individual isolation of the caffes inhabitants, Wasserman seems to be emphasizing that what is important is not the seemingly simple narrative that has brought these figures together, but rather the complexities of modern life which keep them apart. |
