Julie Brown Smith
Artist

My work is about people. What we do in everyday situations, and what goes on around us unnoticed as we go through our lives as observers and as the observed, sometimes aware and often oblivious. My work is also about cities. The cities in this series are London and Oxford, England; San Francisco, and New York City, but they could be any cities in the world. The works are not postcards, but rather a way of looking inside the cities and at the people who inhabit them. I try to capture the essence of private moments in public spaces that are familiar to us all.

The Photobooth Series continues this same theme of people caught in an artificial environment, and the way we can change poses and personalities in a split second between camera flashes. Our common experiences and complex emotions captured in the stark black and white of my work.
