Heidi
Hybl studied art at the
University of California at
Santa Cruz and Monterey
Peninsula College. She grew up
in Chicago, and has lived and
worked in California since
the 1970's. Her early
professional life was spent in
the medical field. She now lives
in the Coastal mountains of Big
Sur, where her life is one of
intense involvement with the
physical world.
Hybl paints in oil, on paper or
stretched canvas. Paying strict
attention to the physical properties
of paint, she makes prints of leaves
and palm fronds. Plants are drawn
with bold lines, often abstracted
beyond their original shapes. The
painting process is layered and
methodical, incorporating memory,
time, and the historical record of
picture-making. This work is from
the "Plant Form" series. Biological
processes inform the imagery.
"Every living thing struggles to
survive and thrive. These paintings
are the visual manifestation of that
struggle, formed from the direct
observation of plants reacting to
and adapting to the environmental
conditions they inhabit. Living
along the Big Sur Coast, I observe
cycles of growth, decay, and
regeneration on a grand scale.
Training in the biological sciences
allows me to affect some of those
changes in small measures, as well
as to have insight into the larger
patterns of the biological world."
The artist has had many one-woman
exhibitions. She has exhibited in
group and juried shows, and received
awards for her efforts. She has
taught classes to children and
adults, served on the Board of
Directors of Artists' Equity, and
interviewed artists on Public Radio.
She has been a member of the Carmel
Art Association since 1998.
