A contemporary landscape artist, Carvell is a colorist inspired by scenic beauty of the Carmel and Salinas valleys and the mountainous central coastal region that remind him of his travels in Portugal, Italy and Greece.
He employs the use of acid-free paper fixed to board or other firm supports to which he applies layers of acrylic painting to achieve his characteristic luminosity. His work verges on the abstract, yet affirms the beauty he finds in nature. The results are spontaneous, energetic compositions.
After graduating from Pacific Grove High School, he took his first art class at Monterey Peninsula College and found his life-long passion for painting. He has an M.A. from Fresno State University and post-graduate studies at Stanford University. He also studied painting with Rip Matteson.
Carvell has been an author, educator, and consultant. An avid sailor, he has explored the islands of the Caribbean and the California coast.
His works are held in private collections throughout the country.
